Most DXF import/export applications work like this, they read a line, if they understand and support it they import it, but if it is a part of DXF not understood/not supported then it is just silently ignored. The other thing to remember about how stupid dxf format is, is that AutoCAD embed another (closed propitiatory) format within DXF to describe solids, so any dxf file containing those will never import into any other CAD application. Mechanical engineering designs would in most cases not contain splines and will usually import into FreeCAD fine.
